The Continent

Step into a reimagined Africa, where the far-reaching Malian Empire controls land stretching from Western to Eastern Ocean, and subordinate kingdoms have pledged their arms to fight against an impending European invasion.

It began with Mansa Mahmud the Conqueror, who marched his armies across the continent offering peace or annihilation near the end of the 15th century. Within two generations, his empire controlled almost half of the continent's known lands.

Now, as the third generation rises, the king of the East commands his son to march their armies into the fray to fulfill old pledges and join the Mansa's fight against a European invasion. Read 'Children of the Sun,' and march with them.

Ndahiro Kwizera, the nephew of a powerful Eastern king, returns to his country after years away to find it on the brink of war. Unsure of his place in it, he joins his royal cousin Prince Manzi as the latter leads his armies on a march across the continent to stop a European invasion. Though Ndahiro has no plans to fight, other troubles find him on the road, pushing him toward an instability of his own. Meanwhile, the king and his trusted adviser Lady Mukagashema struggle to keep the peace in a nation missing most of its forces. As foreign invaders loom, they defend against a domestic threat gathering strength right under their noses.

Old wounds are brought to the surface, threatening to unravel the entire kingdom. The demons of the past converge with the troubles of the present, giving way to an uncertain future for them all.

About the Author

Book Two: Flowers In The Rain
December 2026

In the wake of a major loss, Mukagashema leads a new army north in the king’s name to crush the rebellion threatening the crown from within. Meanwhile, Princess Mwiza settles in with Mukagashema's family, quietly observing as they do their part to hold the realm together.

In the West, Ndahiro joins Manzi in defending the kingdoms against an advancing invasion and quickly learns that this fight is not as straightforward as he thought. Plagued by the tactics of an unknowable European commander, he struggles to maintain composure in the face of the enemy.

On both fronts, East and West, things are not what they seem, and all parties involved learn just how far beyond the battlefield this new war extends.

DanielNsengimana

Daniel Nsengimana is a speculative fiction writer focused on reimagining precolonial African history through alternate and speculative lenses. The idea for Children of the Sun emerged in 2019 during his exploration of the histories of African empires, where research gradually gave way to storytelling. What began as curiosity evolved into a deeper reflection on politics, memory, and the ways power shapes families and leaves lasting trauma across generations. The project has since grown into a planned trilogy, with future installments currently in development.
